Call for Applicants: Musician-in-Residence

Job Summary

The Musician-in-Residence acts as an ambassador to the Madison community, supports our network of musicians and venues, and ensures Make Music Madison serves the city at large. The Musician-in-Residence works to improve equity in music access by increasing participation on Make Music Day (June 21). Reporting to the Board and the Managing Director of Make Music Madison, the Musician-in-Residence serves as the primary contact for musicians participating on Make Music Day, and provides administrative support for Make Music Day and the Neighborhood Main Stages program. Additionally, the Musician-in-Residence will write  an anthem for Make Music Madison and work to help others learn this anthem to unite the community in a shared celebration of live music.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify neighborhoods that have limited exposure to live music or are historically underrepresented in Make Music Madison programming. 
  • Cultivate relationships with community organizations and neighborhood leaders in underserved communities in an effort to support local musicians.
  • Explore solutions to challenges that discourage or prevent artists from engaging on Make Music Day and work to ensure Make Music Day is accessible to performers of all ages, genres, & experience levels.
  • Provide matchmaking support between performers and venues and lead volunteers to assist in this effort.
  • Write an anthem for Make Music Madison (can be collaboratively produced or arranged with other local musicians) and develop strategies to share this anthem and help others learn it in advance of Make Music Day.
  • Lead a mass-appeal performance of the anthem on Make Music Day as part of a 40-minute performance of the Musician-in-Residence chosen music.
  • Serve as the primary contact for musicians leading up to the day of the event, guiding them through the Make Music Day experience. 
  • Must be available in person in Madison between 7 AM and 9 PM on June 21, 2023.

Qualifications

Education: 2 years related college or vocational school training

Experience: 3 year creating and performing original music, 2 years of Microsoft Office  or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills,  and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Madison music industry, including local performers and venues, or a desire and the skill to research and learn this information.
  • Excellent musical skills with the ability to either write music or work with others as needed to arrange an anthem.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage people from diverse backgrounds in conversations about music.
  • Ability to lead a group performance in a welcoming and positive manner.
  • Ability to provide information and directions in a clear, concise, and tactful manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, interns, board members, volunteers, musicians, and members of the public.
  • Welcoming to individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to use a computer and mobile phone, and post on social media channels.

Fluency in other languages is desirable but not required. 

Physical Effort & Working Conditions

The requirements and conditions described below are representative of the general environment the employee is exposed to on a day-to-day basis while performing this job and is not an exhaustive list. 

Equipment Used: Self-supplied technology to complete tasks as needed, including but not limited to musical instruments, computer, tablet, mobile phone. 

Manual Dexterity: Must be able to hold and handle various objects including musical instruments, posters, tip buckets.

Physical Effort: Ability to perform outdoors in variable weather conditions.

Working Conditions: Occasional exposure to noise (music) and crowds. 

Compensation

$30 per hour for no more than 12 hours a week ($10,000 maximum earning). This is a variable, independent contractor position that will be run from early December, 2022 through June 30, 2023. There is an additional one time payment of $300 for a 40 minute performance on Make Music Day 2023.
